An Assistant Coach to Watch

In the next few weeks we will be treated to all sorts of speculation about coaching changes in the NFL. On the Monday after the final games of the season several coaches will be fired or resign. One name that should be mentioned often as a replacement is Gary Kubiak.

Kubiak is the offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos and has been learning under Mike Shanahan since he was Elway's backup and Shanahan was an assistant. Kubiak was an assistant in San Francisco with Shanahan and followed him to Denver. He was the offensive coordinator and primary play-caller during the Broncos' back-to-back Super Bowl seasons. He has interviewed for a couple of positions, but has always decided to stay with Shanahan.

This season I was hopeful that Vikings coach Mike Tice would be allowed to leave gracefully, and the one person I believed could step in and make that offense and entire team better was Gary Kubiak.

It is possible that Shanahan may choose to make a move this offseason or next and that Kubiak is next in line for the Head Coaching job in Denver. As a Broncos fan, that would be fine with me. But Kubiak could also be looked at by other teams this year. The most obvious would be San Francisco.

Kubiak is an extremely aggressive play caller and would be well-suited to any team with the talent to run the West Coast Offense. Minnesota, New Orleans, San Fran, Cleveland, Seattle, and St Louis could all benefit from his style and experience. It will be interesting to see where he ends up next season.
